The following is a press release from the Episcopal News Service: Award winning Episcopal history that still informs and infuses today’s controversies
The Episcopal Church finds itself at the center of a national controversy for supporting a bishop who voiced a plea for the fearful and disadvantaged to the powerful and privileged. For her audacity the church is labeled as the enemy of law and order and accused of subverting the peace of the land. While it is not possible to label a church as godless, it is accused of perverting the sacred traditions of religion.
The Episcopal Church has been there before.
In 1958, Virginia newspapers were reporting that the congregational leadership of the Episcopal church in Martinsville had declared that their bishop’s plan to integrate the summer youth camp “is both illegal and ill-advised” and that they would oppose any “intermingling of the races.” Further, the Vestry took the position that the segregation-integration question was a political-social question having no connection with religion.
“How it was” then infuses and informs much that is happening across our country today. If you do not know this story or you question how this is possible then you need to read Justified by Her Children!
Justified by Her Children is published in hardcover, or paperback by MarinerMedia. Also available at Amazon, B&N, GooglePlay, Apple and wherever good books are sold.
Justified by Her Children is The Reverend Roy G. Pollina’s second book; his first book, To Bless a Child, was published by Church Publishing in 2009. He retired as rector from Christ Church in Martinsville, VA, in the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia after 30 years as a priest. You can visit his Facebook page at Roy G. Pollina, Author.
