Jubilee Episcopal Church, Austin, is off to a rocket launch, with eyes set to kicking off with regular public worship by Advent 1. As a community primarily of Millennials and Gen Z ex-evangelicals, they are laying a foundation in the liberating, life-giving love of God who makes all things new, from the repurposed liturgical materials gifted by St. Paul’s in Pflugerville and Incarnation in South Austin to their faith that they carry the church and will be a place of healing and restoration. Their faith and hopes are embodied in the name for this community: as Brené Brown says, “…joy is the most vulnerable human emotion…” They believe that trusting in God’s joy – joy in us, for us, and with us – is the key to embodying a perfect love that casts out fear.
About Father Lizzie McManus-Dail:
Born in the American South, Lizzie had her First Communion in a Catholic parish at age 8, as a teen, watched her mother become an ordained Methodist Elder, and fell in love with queer feminist theology at Mount Holyoke College before formally being confirmed in the Episcopal Church in 2015. She graduated from Duke Divinity with an MTS in 2016, though she’s quick to say that everything she needed to really learn about ministry, she learned from years of waiting tables and working in the service industry. Seminary of the Southwest drew her and her spouse, Jonathan (also an Episcopal priest) to Austin in 2018, and they’ve bloomed in the Texas sun ever since. In early 2022, they welcomed their first child and are still incandescently smitten. Lizzie now gets to live her absolute dream job as Vicar of Jubilee Episcopal Church, a colorful new faith community in North Austin, rooted in remembering that God made us out of God’s joy.
